Object: Tool; Wood Plane

Physical Description: Wooden plane with the initials 'B.G' branded on the side. Plane has a light green enamel badge showing the maker of the tool 'Schutz Ulmia Marke'

Information: This plane forms part of the Bernard Grunberg Collection and was sent to England, along with other tools, by Bernard's father. The initials were branded using a cattle iron, this was to make the items look second hand.

Further Information:  Bernard Grunberg was born in 1923 in Lingen, Germany and lived with his parents and sister. When he was 15 years old, Bernard came over to England on the Kindertransport due to the increasing Nazi persecution of Jewish people. He spent time in an arriving children's camps before becoming a farm hand. Bernard later married and has been a prominent speaker at the NHCM. Bernard's father, mother and sister were all murdered by the Nazi regime.

This wood plane is one of several tools which was part of a complete joinery set sent over to England for Bernard by his father. The tools arrived in 1939, and Bernard’s father hoped they would help him to make a living in Britain. ‘BG’ has been branded onto the tools to make them appear second hand and allow them to enter the UK without further cost or restriction.
