This photograph forms part of the Dorothy Fleming Collection. Dorothy Fleming was born Dora Oppenheimer in Vienna, Austria, and as a young child enjoyed family life with her parents and sister. This photograph was taken on a family holiday to a farm outside of Vienna. The image shows Dorothy as a young child standing in front of her mother, Hanna. They are with Dorothy's grandparents, known at the time as 'Little Granny', 'Big Granny', and 'Grandfather'. Dorothy's maternal grandparents Jaques and Clara, pictured standing, lived across the road from the family. The lady pictured sitting is Dorothy's paternal grandmother, Marie. Marie had been widowed as a young woman and lived with Dorothy and her family. The family were in increasing danger from the rise of Nazism and the persecution of Jewish people. Facing this danger, and increasing anti-Jewish measures, Dorothy and her sister were sent by their parents to England on the Kindertransport in January 1939. Reflecting on the photograph in 2015, Dorothy recalls loving and happy memories particularly of Clara, and the sadness she felt at leaving her grandmother. Dorothy’s parents were later able to escape to Britain with the help of a friend, who assisted Dorothy's father, Erich, in his efforts to secure passage. Clara chose to stay in Vienna to care for Jaques who had become very ill, after his passing of natural causes there was no chance to leave, Clara was murdered during the Holocaust.
