Photograph of Bernard Grunberg on a bicyle trip in Holland, in 1936.

This picture is part of the Bernard Grunberg Collection, it was taken in 1936. It shows Bernard, who is at the bottom on the right of the image, on a bicycle trip in Holland. The children who went on the bicycle trip were all Jewish boys from Nazi Germany. The tour went along the German-Dutch border, on the Dutch side. Whilst the children were there they met up with a group of Dutch Scouts, who are pictured with Bernard in this image. Speaking of the trip in 2016, Bernard says: ‘I think the idea was to give you a change from the political city, and take you away from that. I mean at that time Jewish boys were isolated in a way that they would not be in contact with any non-Jewish boys at all. None of the boys would even attempt to be friendly with you, because of the constant anti-Jewish propaganda’.
