Further Information

This is a photograph of Ruth David's maternal aunt, Liese. It is one of the last pictures taken of Liese in Germany. In the face of increasing danger from Nazi persecution of Jewish people, Liese managed to secure passage to England on a domestic permit. This would save her life and she worked as a domestic servant in England for the duration of the Holocaust and the Second World War. Prior to her having to leave, Liese travelled around Germany as she was very interested in the topography of the country. Ruth remembers her aunt as having a love for Germany, and feeling a great sense of loss at being forced to leave. Prior to leaving Germany Liese had been a Kindergarten teacher, but this job was taken away from her soon after Adolf Hitler gained power as part of anti-Jewish measures brought in by the Nazi party.
