Further Information

Ellen was born in 1922 in Königsberg, East Prussia. The family lived there happily during Ellen’s early childhood. They kept many of the Jewish holidays, and religion was an important part of family life. This photograph shows an office interior and is one from an album containing eleven photographs, mostly of Ellen's father's business, although there is also a photo of Ellen and her younger brother as babies. The office belonged to Moritz Herrmann, Ellen's grandfather, who had founded the firm with his brother in 1868. Ellen's father, Hans, was a businessman and visited other countries including England, selling materials for tailors. They sold cloth, linings, buttons, and other goods associated with the trade. The photographs contained in this album depict a cross-section of life within their firm. As the family were Jewish, their business was taken from them during the Holocaust. Ellen survived as she was sent to England on the Kindertransport, her parents were murdered by the Nazi regime.
