Further Information

This photograph forms part of the Dorothy Fleming Collection. Dorothy Fleming was born Dora Oppenheimer in Vienna, Austria, and as a young child enjoyed family life with her parents and sister. The photograph was taken in 1932 and shows Dorothy as a four year old child, standing in Rathauspark in Vienna. The building behind Dorothy is the Rathaus, which is the City Hall of Vienna. The photograph is part of a collection which depict the family's life, including outings and holidays, before the Holocaust. Many of the pictures in the collection were taken by Dorothy’s father and uncle, who was able to process his own photographs. This particular image is a duplicate of 2015.78.8, which has not come out in such sharp focus. As the family were in increasing danger from the rise of Nazism and the persecution of Jewish people, Dorothy and her sister were sent by their parents to England on the Kindertransport in January 1939.
