Key Question: To what extent is the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas an accurate depiction of the Holocaust?

Summary: The engagement day will allow students to analyse the accuracy of the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by exploring the historical context of the period. During the day there will be several workshops that will cover the chronological events of Hitler’s Germany and the Holocaust; the development of Nazi society (Volksgemeinschaft); Ghettoisation and the Death Camps. The workshops will contain primary sources and survivor testimony.

Overview of Workshops

Workshop 1: Timeline
Outcome: To determine the starting point of the Holocaust

Summary
Students will be provided with key information regarding the period 1933-1945 and will be required to place the information at the correct points along the timeline. This will then stimulate discussion and debate regarding the starting point of the Holocaust.

Workshop 2: Development of Nazi society (Volksgemeinschaft)
Outcome: To analyse the accuracy of Bruno’s perception of Nazi society

Summary
Students will start the session by identifying Bruno’s perception of Nazi society. They might make reference to Bruno’s perception of Jewish people, youth groups, education etc. Students will then be provided with a range of primary sources to examine the process by which Nazi society developed and they will be able to compare and contrast the evidence they gain from the sources against Bruno’s perceptions.

Workshop 3: Lodz Ghetto and Auschwitz-Birkenau
Outcome: To develop a deeper understanding of life in the Lodz gehtto and Auschwitz-Birkenau

Summary
Students will be shown a film from Arek Hersh who talks about his experinces.

Workshop 4: Extended Writing
Outcome: To produce an extended piece of writing in response to the Key Question: To what extent is the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas an accurate depiction of the Holocaust?

Summary
Students will use the evidence they have gathered from each workshop to produce an extended response in relation to the accuracy of the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Prices
All prices are based on one day of delivery at your school and include one educator per 30 students and relevant resources:

15-30 students = £200 + travelling expenses at 0.45 pence per mile.
31-60 students = £400 + travelling expenses at 0.45 pence per mile.
61-90 students = £600 + travelling expenses at 0.45 pence per mile.
90+ students = please contact the Bookings Team to discuss prices.
