Further Information

This document was donated by Vera Price. The document is a release certificate from Buchenwald Concentration Camp, dated at the top 3 May 1939. The certificate confirms the release of a Jewish man called Alfred Schlesinger, who would later go on to date Vera’s mother Suse, after the death of Vera's stepfather. By that point Vera and her family were living in the United Kingdom after fleeing Nazi persecution of Jewish people. Alfred had been held in Buchenwald Concentration Camp by the Nazi regime since 28 May 1938, as a ‘protective custody’ prisoner. The certificate confirms his release to Berlin, following orders to that end received on 28 April 1939, and the reverse compels Alfred to report to the State police on his arrival in Berlin. The certificate is stamped with a Berlin stamp dated 5 May 1939.
