'From Kristallnacht to Kibbutz Be'eri'

Pogrom Ideology and how to beat it

A lecture by our Chief Academic Adviser, Professor Maiken Umbach | 9th October 2024

"A powerful probe into the minds of anti-Jewish terrorists and their apologists."

On the anniversary of the October 7 pogrom, Professor Umbach looks at the unifying ideology behind thousands of pogroms over 2,000 years, which have led to the ethnic cleansing of Jewish communities across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Maiken reveals the hidden connections between the story of white Jews and the lesser known but longer story of brown Jews. She traces the lineage of Hamas back to the Nazis and to the pogromists before them. She also offers an educational idea as to how we tackle anti-Jewish conspiracy theories in Britain. They are the tip of the iceberg which all of us on the Centre Ground must heed.

This lecture draws on the work of our Racism Response Unit. We are helping more and more adults as well as schoolchildren to learn the skill of 'critical thinking'. We are getting them to see the link between supposedly progressive ideas today and Nazi ones of yesterday.

In a year-long training programme of university staff, cartoons depicting 'Jewish puppet masters' were seen as being racist against Jews by 42% of participants beforehand - but by a huge 92% after.

This is a new kind of Holocaust education for a new kind of Britain. And it works.

Your ticket helps our work go further.

Helps us spread 'critical thinking' skills. Help us ensure the October 7 pogrom never leads to what the Kristallnacht pogrom led to. All ticket proceeds will go towards our innovative educational work.

And if you find the lecture useful, maybe even consider a regular donation. Every year, we teach some 45,000 children. But over half the cost is the school coach fare. A regular donation will help keep them coming.

Thank you.
