Further Information

This photograph forms part of the Dorothy Fleming Collection, it was taken in 1932 at Schönbrunn,Vienna. The picture shows Dorothy as a young girl holding hands with her mother, Hanna, behind Dorothy's paternal aunt, Margaret, who was known as 'Gretel'. Hanna and Gretel were good friends, and Gretel would often come and visit the family because her mother, Dorothy's paternal grandmother, lived with Dorothy and her parents. As the family were in increasing danger from the rise of Nazism and the persecution of Jewish people, Dorothy and her sister were sent by their parents to England on the Kindertransport in January 1939. Dorothy’s father, who had been an optician in Vienna, was later able to secure a permit to come to England through the help of a friend. Gretel was also able to secure passage out of Vienna.
