Further Information

This photograph forms forms part of the Dorothy Fleming Collection. The picture was taken in 1931, and shows Dorothy as a young child with her mother, Hanna. Dorothy was born Dora Oppenheimer in Vienna, Austria, and as a young child enjoyed family life. Dorothy was three years old at the time the photograph was taken, and the pair were being pictured during a family holiday at a farm in the district of Rodaun just outside of Vienna. As they were staying relatively close to Vienna, Dorothy's father, Erich, worked at home on weekdays and travelled to join the family on weekends. Because the family were in increasing danger from the rise of Nazism and persecution of Jewish people, Dorothy and her little sister, Lisi, were sent by their parents to England on the Kindertransport in January 1939. Dorothy’s father, who had been an optician in Vienna, was later able to secure a permit to come to England through the help of a friend.
