Further Information

This photograph forms part of the Bernard Grunberg Collection. The image shows Bernard’s sister, Gerda, who was two and a half years older than Bernard. The photograph was taken of Gerda when she was in her late teens, at a domestic science school near Cologne. Due to the increasing danger from the Nazi regime and persecution of Jewish people, Bernard was sent to England on the Kindertransport when he was 15 years old. Once arrived Bernard spent some time in arriving children's camps before becoming a farm hand. Gerda was too old to come to Britain on the Kindertransport, she stayed in Germany along with their parents. Bernard's family were murdered during the Holocaust. Bernard stayed in Britain, later married and was a prominent speaker at the National Holocaust Centre and Museum.
