Photograph 43; Ruth David Image Use: Use of images owned by the National Holocaust Centre and Museum is governed by our Terms and Conditions. Accession Number: NEKHC:2016.1.43 Object: Photographs Physical Description: Photograph complete Information: This photograph forms part of the Ruth David Collection. It is from a collection of almost fifty photographs depicting Ruth's family over an extended period of time, from long before Ruth's birth in the late 1920s, through to the 1940s. Ruth's family were Jewish and lived in Germany. Further Information This photograph is of members of Ruth David's family at a picnic. It features Ruth's maternal grandfather, Moritz Krämer, who died in 1921. He is sitting on the right of the picture. On the left of the picture is Ruth's maternal grandmother, Feodora. Ruth's mother, Margarete is in the picture sitting next to her father. Here she is a young student in Frankfurt, where the maternal family lived. Feodora committed suicide in Frankfurt shortly before the birth of Ruth's youngest sister in 1934. Letters which she had written to family members prior to her death indicate her distress at the increasing pressure put on Jewish people by Nazism. Margarete met Ruth's father, Moritz, and the two were married in 1924. Margarete was a mathematician, and including Ruth she had four children. Both of Ruth's parents were murdered during the Holocaust because the family were Jewish.
