Information: This photograph forms part of the Ruth David Collection. It is from a collection of almost fifty photographs depicting Ruth's family over an extended period of time, from long before Ruth's birth in the late 1920s, through to the 1940s. Ruth's family were Jewish and lived in Germany.

Further Information

This photograph is of the two headmistresses, Miss Brett and Miss Knox, of Oakburn School in Windermere, England. Ruth David had been sent alone to England on the Kindertransport, to save her life in the face of increasing danger from Nazi persecution of Jewish people. Ruth left a large family behind, being one of seven siblings. The family had been living in Fränkisch-Crumbach, Germany, and had experienced increasing anti-Semitism and anti-Jewish measures after Hitler came to power. Ruth remembers Miss Brett and Miss Knox fondly, especially the support they gave Ruth in her education. Ruth remained in England, went on to university and became a high achiever after the end of the Second World War. Ruth's parents, Margarete and Moritz, were murdered during the Holocaust.
