Further Information

This membership card forms part of the Dorothy Fleming Collection. Dorothy Fleming was born Dora Oppenheimer in Vienna, Austria, and as a young child enjoyed family life with her parents and sister. This card confirms Dorothy's membership to their local ice skating rink for the 1937/1938 season. It advertises approaching events, provides membership details, and has a photograph of Dorothy as a young girl. Reflecting on the card in 2015, Dorothy recalls happy memories of watching much admired professional skaters, and sharing time with her mother who also held membership and enjoyed skating. The treat of grapes dipped in a sugar-syrup after achieving an improvement or a new movement during skating practice is also fondly remembered by Dorothy. The family were in increasing danger from the rise of Nazism and the persecution of Jewish people. Facing this danger, and increasing anti-Jewish measures, Dorothy and her sister were sent by their parents to England on the Kindertransport in January 1939. Dorothy’s parents were also later able to secure passage to Britain.
