Further Information

This letter forms part of the Ellen Rawson Collection, Ellen was born in 1922 in Königsberg, East Prussia. The family lived there happily during Ellen’s early childhood. They kept many of the Jewish holidays, and religion was an important part of family life. The letter is dated 24 May 1933, and was written by Ellen's father, Hans. It states that he is writing to politely request a certificate of military service. Hans details his service as a volunteer with the 52nd Field Artillery Regiment, II Battery from 1912-1913, and the during mobilisation he served as a reserve in the 7th Field Artillery Regiment and the Foot Artillery, Battery 423, from which I was also discharged. Hans urges that the request be processed quickly and enclosed a stamped addressed envelope. As the family were Jewish, their business and home was taken from them during the Holocaust. Ellen survived as she was sent away from the increasing persecution to England on the Kindertransport, her parents were murdered by the Nazi regime.

Translation:

I am writing to politely request a certificate of military service.

Before the War, I served as a one-year volunteer with the 52nd Field Artillery Regiment, II Battery from 1912-1913. During Mobilisation, I served as a reserve in the 7th Field Artillery Regiment and the Foot Artillery, Battery 423, from which I was also discharged.

I ask that my request be processed as quickly as possible, and to this end I enclose a stamped addressed envelope.
