Tuesday 23rd July 1pm-3pm

Meet the Holocaust Survivor: Ruth Schwiening, Kindertransport Child and Contemporary Artist.

Join us for this special event where we look at how Holocaust Survivor testimony can inspire contemporary art.

We are delighted to welcome Kindertransportee and a beloved member of our Survivor family, Ruth Schwiening who will offer her emotive testimony and talk about how her experiences during the Holocaust have defined her artwork.

We begin with a short film created about her 'Ruth's Art', where Ruth explains how using the mediums of glass, eggshell and oil on canvas, she depicts the fragility of life. We gain an insight into her colourful home and sense of humour!

Ruth will then offer her testimony covering her journey to England on the Kindertransport and her life thereafter.

Spotlight Studios will then perform a short ballet. 'The Girl and the Butterfly', is a piece of creative writing by Ruth and they have interpreted this short story into dance.

Friend of the museum and local songwriter Bill Varnam (Broken Instruments) will join us to perform 'Ruth's Song', written after his first meeting with Ruth and being moved by her testimony.

We open the floor to questions and discussion about Ruth, art and the sensitivity of interpreting Survivor Testimony into a creative narrative.

Please note that entry to the event requires both an admission ticket £10 and and event ticket £5. If you already have a valid admission ticket from the last 12 months then please select 'free return' and then purchase your event ticket.  – please book in advance to ensure your place on the day.
